A round table event was held at Telenor Pakistan headquarters 345 where the significance of female participation in the country\u2019s labor force was discussed. The session was attended by Dr. Sania Nishtar, Kashmala Tariq, representatives from key telecom players, microfinance banks, and policymakers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The participants exchanged insights and ideas\non the challenges at hand and shared solutions to improve the female labor\nparticipation rate in the country, which currently stands at only 26%. The\nambition of GLWE is to support awareness, advocacy and action to support girls\u2019\neducation and women\u2019s participation in the labor force, encouraging a shared\ncommitment and larger effort to raise women\u2019s participation in the economy to\n45% by 2025. Some of the\nfactors that hinder economic contribution by females is limited mobility,\nsocietal attitudes towards working women and overwhelming household\nresponsibilities among others. To empower and enable more women to step out of\ntheir homes for work, leaders from various organizations pledged support and\ninitiatives to improve financial inclusion of females, impart skillset of the\nfuture and help develop a platform for women that enables harassment reporting.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\nare extremely pleased to join hands with The World Bank on their \u2018Girls Learn\nWomen Earn\u2019 initiative and have come up with action items for the industry and\nsociety at large that aim at empowering women\u201d said Irfan Wahab Khan, CEO\nTelenor Pakistan and Head of Emerging Asia Cluster Telenor Group. \u201cBeing a part\nof the fast evolving tech industry, we aim to help impart skill set of the future\nthat includes design thinking and tools that are shaping up the job market.\nTogether, through the GLWE initiative, we look forward to further lift and\ndevelop females for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elaborating\non the initiative, Sardar Muhammad Abubakr, Chief Digital and Strategy Officer\nTelenor Pakistan, mentioned that as a showcase of Telenor Pakistan\u2019s\ncommitment, the company intends to leverage the internal design thinking\nprogram, Activate, to upskill 100 aspiring women entrepreneurs in March. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur\ngoal for the \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/events\/2019\/12\/01\/girls-learn-women-earn\">Girls Learn Women Earn\u2019<\/a> initiative is to empower girls and\nwomen for inclusive growth as they are central to driving a vibrant economy,\u201d\nsaid Illango Patchamuthu, World Bank Group&#8217;s Country Director for Pakistan.\n\u201cFor P\u00adakista\u00adn to become an upper middle-income country by the time it a\u00adppro\u00adaches\nits 100<sup>th<\/sup> a\u00adnniversa\u00adry, we need to take solid actions now to\nstrengthen women\u2019s contribution to the economy.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\nher keynote statement, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Social\nProtection and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Sania Nishtar stated, \u201cWomen\nempowerment is at the heart of Ehsaas framework. The program is highly skewed\ntowards uplifting of disadvantaged women through a multisectoral approach,\nenabling them to become contributing members of the economy. With Ehsaas\nDevelopment Partners\u2019 Forum in place and public private partnership in the\npipeline, the multistakeholder construct of Ehsaas solutions offers wide-ranging\nopportunities to exploit synergies. Adding further, she elaborated, \u201c To bring\nabout more sustainable change, Ehsaas constantly follows the fifty percent rule\nfor women inclusion in all Ehsaas initiatives including interest free loans,\nscholarships and asset transfers.&nbsp;\nKafaalat that has recently been launched by the PM will ensure financial\nand digital inclusion of 7 million disadvantaged women across Pakistan who will\nnow benefit from the monthly stipend of Rs. 2,000 along with access to bank\naccounts and affordable smart phones.
