Karandaaz Pakistan\u2019s\nlatest study provides an in-depth analysis and evaluation of Pakistan\u2019s medical\ndiagnostic equipment market for clinical laboratories that fall into the\ncategory of small and medium enterprises along with an assessment of the\navailability and need for formal financing. The aim is to provide financial\ninstitutions with insights that would allow them to design new financial\nproducts or tailor existing ones such that they are more responsive to demand\nand closely aligned with the financing requirements of small and medium enterprises\noperating in this segment. According\nto the report titled \u2018Market Analysis of Equipment for Clinical Laboratories\nand Availability of and Need for Formal Financing in Pakistan\u2019, in 2017 the\ntotal value of diagnostic services within Pakistan\u2019s private sector was\nestimated to be between USD 500 to 600 million with an expected growth rate of\n15 percent over the next five years. Findings suggest that nearly 15 million disease\ncases, in both the Punjab and Sindh provinces, have not been diagnosed despite\npatients\u2019 ability to afford such tests because of lack of ready diagnostic\nfacilities. Initial assessment shows that a huge potential exists for increased\npenetration of diagnostics services through private enterprises, especially\namong patients who can afford to pay for such services. The unmet need of such\nfacilities is primarily due to lack of access to finance for the sector,\nespecially for formal local establishments and regional operators (such as\nShifa, Sindh lab and Essa). An assessment of the market shows that the primary\nmedical and diagnostic equipment market is very well-organized. It is dominated\nprimarily by well-known multinational players that produce new or refurbished\nequipment that tends to have better technology and quality. Of the total\nequipment sold in the primary suppliers\u2019 market, 40\u201360% is refurbished and\nresold to new customers in the secondary market who have relatively limited\nbudgets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On\nthe other hand, the secondary medical and diagnostic equipment market is driven\nby highly price-sensitive participants\u2014e.g., manufacturers, secondhand\ndistributors\u2014who prefer buying secondhand\nequipment at very low scrap value. This\nimplies an appetite for short-term financing with a lower ticket size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mehr\nShah, Director of Knowledge Management and Communications, Karandaaz Pakistan,\nsaid, \u201cThere is a mushrooming in demand for diagnostic and lab equipment in\nPakistan, and the availability of financing has a direct impact on the\nproportion of demand that is met i.e., the growth of the sector. To enable\nbetter understanding of this space from a financing perspective, the study\nidentifies the types and brands of capital intensive, revenue generating\nequipment commonly used and its pricing in the primary and secondary market;\nthe cost of repair and maintenance; the value chain in terms of vendors,\nimporters and re-sellers in the primary and secondary markets; and the\nfinancing arrangement at each stage of the value chain.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
