Telenor\nPakistan\u2019s initiatives to ensure children\u2019s rights and protection were\nrecognized by the Global Child Forum, a Swedish non-profit headquartered in\nStockholm. In its latest \u2018Corporate Responses to Protecting Children\u2019s Rights\u2019\nreport, the non-profit put Telenor at the top of the child protection index,\nsurveying all major Nordic corporations. The report has cited Telenor Group as\na best practice example with its work in child online safety and transparent\nreporting on child labor in Telenor\u2019s supply chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Highlights\nof the report are Telenor Pakistan\u2019s Digital Birth Registration (DBR) project,\nthe school outreach program for child online safety called iChamp, and\ntransparent reporting of child labor in the supply chain. Telenor Pakistan\nlaunched the Digital Birth Registration project in collaboration with the\nUNICEF in 2016 with an aim to give Pakistani children their fundamental right\nto identity and improve their access to basic amenities, as well as to improve\nthe conventional birth registration process. The program empowers unregistered\nchildren with legal documentation which can, among other things, curtail child\nlabor and trafficking. Till date, 580,000 births in Pakistan have been\ndigitally registered under the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Similarly,\nTelenor Pakistan has taken solid measures to promote digital literacy among\nchildren besides educating them on online safety through school outreach program\ncalled iChamp. Initiated in 2014 to familiarize and educate underprivileged\nchildren from far-flung areas about basic internet to improve their lives,\niChamp continued to achieve so much more than was initially anticipated. In\n2017, Telenor collaborated with Free Basics by Facebook through which students\ngot free access to an online information portal with 17 websites using\nTelenor\u2019s data connection. So far, the Telenor iChamp program has reached out\nto 1800 schools across the country, educating and training over 600,000\nstudents on using mobile technology for learning beyond classrooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Especially encouraging is the focus on our work with child\nonline safety and digital birth registration \u2013 where we have educated 2,200,000\nchildren to date globally and have digitally registered 580,000 births in\nPakistan \u2013 as well as our ongoing transparent reporting of child labour in the\nsupply chain.
